Wintah’s “snow” excuse to stay hunkahed down, deah!
Enjoy lots of fun things to do in Maine this weekend, indoors and out. Here’s a sampling:
Like to dance? Beginners and pros alike are welcome at the Bangor Contradance, the third Friday of every month (yep, that’s tonite) beginning at 8 o’clock, at the Unitarian Universalist church, 120 Park Street in Bangor. Step Lively!
For some good ol’ DownEast Maine fun this weekend, take a drive down to Stonington. Picturesquely placed at the southern tip of Deer Isle, accessible by bridges, it’s about as fah out ta sea as you can get in Maine and still be drivin’ yoah cah, deah). This lively lobster town is celebrating its annual Healthy Island Project Winterfest. Tonight it’s a yummy soup dinner at Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School, followed by a fun yo-yo performance (Yo-Yo Ma? Perhaps not). Saturday’s events include a yo-yo workshop, cribbage tournament, and, for the more athletic-minded, a pickleball tournament. What’s pickleball? Hint: we hear the fans make quite a racket. There’s lots more, so here’s where you can find all the details.
For the “long-hairs” out there (that’s anyone young or old who appreciates the classics): on Sunday, attend a performance of “The Sleeping Beauty” by the renowned Bolshoi Ballet, broadcast live from Moscow and presented in HD on the big screen. Curtain’s up at 1 pm at the Strand Theater on Rockland’s Main Street.
Closer to home, the Bangor Symphony presents cellist Noreen Silver Sunday at 3 pm, performing works of Bach, Haydn and Handel, Sunday at 3:00 at the Collins Center for the Arts.
Finally, a sneak preview of next weekend. We’re sharing this with you now ’cause this one sells out fast: the 5th annual Wishing Under the Stars Gala takes place NEXT Saturday, January 28 at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor. Festivities include dinner, family-friendly stand-up comedy, a silent auction, music and dancing. All proceeds from this event benefit Make a Wish of Maine. For tickets and info, call 944-0539.
